I'm so depressed right now because of this. A woman in LA dies on a hospital floor, writhing and vomitting blood, but no one helps her. Patients just look on (except for one who checked on her, then presumably went back to whatever s/he was doing). She's dismissed as a complainer and ignored. While she lies there, a janitor comes by and cleans up the blood around her. Her boyfriend comes by the hospital, is enraged by this, calls 911, who are reluctant to send police dispatches to a hospital. They do anyway, and run her record through the system, finds she's got an outstanding warrant, and arrest her. Un-fucking-believable. She died even before she got onto the squad car.

Man, why are you depressed by this? I'm FURIOUS. Gah. I cant stand such things. How can anyone react nothing when someone is vomitting blood in front of you? If I'm the police or hospital head you'll be sure I'll kick their asses personally and leave them writhing on the floor, unattended. And I dont think those people felt they are doing anything wrong either, which is the worst part. Damn those retards who follow rules blindly and practise apathy.
Oh, and the irony...you know the part about the police arresting her reminds me of a scene in the movie Babel where this mexican illegal emmigrant was arrested in the middle of the desert while trying to get the police to understand that she is trying to get help and the kids are left alone still in the desert. Those suckers just arrest her and deported her off. Gah.

Well, depressed doesn't really describe how I feel. Neither does furious. There isn't really a word for it. I think its an amalgam of all those plus cynicism.
The story of the Tower of Babel is probably a really good analogy of how people are incapable of understanding, much less helping, each other.
And yet, if you do a little research, its not the first time this particular hospital has committed such gaffes and a lot of other factors have to be considered as well. Would something like this happen if the woman was young, white and blonde?

to pest: the reason they ignored her was that she had been treated 3 times before (well I don't know about using the word 'treated'... being given a couple of pills and told to shove off hardly amounts to 'treatment') and the nurses thought she was doing it to get drugs. Still. Blood. Coming out of mouth =/= faking to get drugs. Blood!!!
jc: nope, it's not the first time, that hospital has had a bad record, as have other hospitals (in mainly poorer areas.) It's probably a combination of the lack of universal health care in the states plus overworked and underpaid hospital staff and a screwed up admin system.
